How TripAdvisor Changes Impact Who Sees Your Hotel Online
TripAdviosr recently made changes to its Popularity Ranking for hotels to improve the traveler shopping experience. Those changes affect you and how visible your hotel is on the world’s largest travel search engine.
Here’s an excerpt of what you need to know.
Why the change?
With the high volume of reviews posted on TripAdvisor, there were many occasions where new properties were able to jump to the top of rankings (referred to by TripAdvisor as “fast-risers”) resulting in some inaccurate rankings with businesses appearing lower than they would otherwise.
What impacts TripAdvisor rankings?
Quality, recency and quantity of reviews are the three factors that interact to determine a property’s Popularity Ranking. To put it simply, TripAdvisor summarizes it like this:
· More reviews are better than fewer reviews
· Good reviews are better than poor reviews
· Recent reviews are better than older reviews
How the enhanced algorithm works
The algorithm continues to be based on the quality, recency and quantity of reviews that a business receives from travelers. The enhanced rankings ensure a more accurate representation of a business’s performance over time by considering the quantity and consistency of reviews more significantly than before. This helps to maintain a more balanced ranking for all hotels, decreases fast-riser behavior and improves the overall site experience for travelers.
Online travel search is more important than ever. Hotels need to understand how they’re performing online compared to their comp set and how they rank those hotels on TripAdvisor.
