This Thanksgiving is on track to be the biggest for travel since 2007 with an estimated 46.9 million people traveling 50 miles or more during the holiday, an increase of 300,000 compared to last year, according to AAA Travel. The majority of travelers – up to 42 million Americans – will be driving. About 3.6 million Americans are flying to their holiday destinations, which is an increase of just 0.1% over last year.

So where is everyone going?

According to nSight consumer shopping data from over 5,000 travel websites for travel dates over the Thanksgiving holiday period of Wednesday, November 25, to Sunday, November 29, the top state destinations are:

  1. Florida
  2. California
  3. New York
  4. Texas

The strong pull of sun and surf make Florida the top destination with the majority of travelers headed to Orlando and Miami/Ft. Lauderdale for the long break.

California offers the same allure for consumers who want one last warm weather romp before they hunker town for the winter. Los Angeles and San Francisco drive the majority of local search for this popular destination.

In New York City, the promise of the world’s best holiday shopping, theater, and dining keeps the city top of mind. Based on nSight’s predictive search data, The Big Apple is the number one city searched by U.S. travelers for Thanksgiving holiday stays.

Demand for Dallas and Houston puts Texas at the number four for top U.S. destinations for Thanksgiving 2015.

Regardless of where you’re traveling this week, you’re sure to have a lot of company on the road and in the air.

Happy Thanksgiving!
